Joanna Hanley (Kristin Kreuk) is a Toronto lawyer with ties to a small town. She is ambitious, straightforward and sticks to the facts. When girls from her hometown of Millwood, Manitoba, start to have mysterious seizures and motor function loss, the HPV vaccine is blamed. Representing the pharmaceutical company that makes the product, Joanna goes in to stop an injunction for the vaccine but soon learns there is much more to the case than she expected. Her rival and former schoolmate, Billy Crawford (Peter Mooney), represents the girls and thinks Joanna is forgetting her roots working for a big-money company offering a mere pittance for his clients’ suffering. When the results don’t sit right with her, she decides to investigate further, making Millwood her temporary home. On top of the case, she has to deal with a legacy attached to her family name and the secrets kept from her, personal relationships and fighting big business and local government.

This series which debuted in 2018, focuses on commitments and loyalties plus doing what’s right instead of what’s required. Kreuk is a familiar face on Canadian TV, from Smallville (2001-2011) to Beauty and the Beast (2012-2016), and the Vancouver-born actor embraces Joanna’s growth and empathy with her signature style. Four seasons of Burden of Truth explores Joanna helping the people of Millwood, rebuilding relationships from the past and forging new ones.
