Crimes of the Future

In an unspecified future, bodies are reality and reality is changing. Canadian writer/director David Cronenberg once again steps into his ooey-gooey comfort territory of body horror to bring audiences a new film which sees its characters driven to the limits of the corporeal body.

Saul Tenser (Viggo Mortensen) has Accelerated Evolution Syndrome which has emerged in the reality of the film as a possible new evolutionary divergence in humanity. His performance art partner Caprice (Léa Seydoux) works and lives with Saul turning his surgery to remove his new mutations into performance art  which has become the new way to gain celebrity status. They are drawn into the mysterious world of both the government and a strange, possibly nefarious underground movement lead by Lang (Scott Speedman).

Crimes of the Future is replete with multiple Cronenberg tropes including fleshy augmentations, unsettling future-tech and characters in search of meaning in a world threatened by corruption and control. The film, which has been in development on and off for over 20 years, underscores that the director’s anxieties about bodily autonomy, identity and performance remain as relevant as ever.
